Boy's Training Farm.

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION, 1912

On Tuesday afternoon the annual distribution of gifts and prizes at tho Boys' Training Farm, at Weraroa, took place in the social hall. Major G. M. Burlinson, the manager, had invited a number of representative people to the gathering, and the invitation was availed of by Mr John Kebbell, J.P., official visitor, liis' wife and family, Mrs Gardener, who apologised for the 11 navoidable absence of her husband the Mayor, 'Mr Gibson, the superintendent of the Sunday school, and family. Apologies were received from a number of gentlemen, including the Rev. S. G. Compton, tho Rov. A. C. Randerson and the Rev. T. F. Jones, who had prior engagements, and the same in the case of Mr Stephenson, the chairman of the County Council, and others. Tho social hall was comfortably full; 215 boys attended, and after an overture by the brass hand, conducted by Lieutenant Herd, at the ger's request Mrs Gardener kindly handed gifts to each boy. A song by the school boys under their instructor, Lieutenant Herd, was favourably received. Mr Kebbell presented a gold medal to Robert Frank Hammond, the best boy, in the school. The othor prizes were handed over to the recipients by Mrs Kebbell and 'Mrs Gardener, after which tho National Anthem was sung. Proceedings were curtailed partly 011 account of the time. Major Burlinson, tho manager, gives a very satisfactory account of tho institution during tho year and one of tho gratifying features is that no less than four of the former boys presented prizes for their school fellows. Altogether the function was a very pleasing and gratifying one Perhaps the special characteristic was the happy expression 011 tho faces of all those who were present. Major Burlinson returned thanks to the many friends who had assisted him in many ways during the year. Among others tho manager referred to Lieutenant Herd who instructs in instrumental and vooal music, Mr Gibson, the superintendent of the Sunday School, and his staff, the Rev. .Mr Compton, Vicar of St Mary's, Levin, for religious instruction 011 Wednesdays. Tho Major referred especially to Mr Ferriman, of Aehburton, whose gift of hooks some eighteen months ago was one of the handsomest presents he had ever received for the Boys; it was.decidedly tho very finest set of books, and he expressed his high appreciation of Mr Ferriman''; kind tlioughtfulness and generosity.
