Levin Municipal Gasworks

A Chronicle representative yesterday visited the Levin gasworks and made a torn- of inspection. He noted the general cleanliness of the works and the excellent state of preservation of the buildings. Ample provision has been made for coping with the increased output of gas. The council has wisely made arrangements in connection with this matter without having to rebuild to any great extent. The present output is considerably over 4,000,000 cubic feet of gas per annum, and the. works are designed so that, if necessary, 8,000,000 to 10,000,000 feet per annum can be dealt- with, with very little further expenditure. The borough has taken the precaution of always liaving a stock of coal varying from fifty to seventy tons in hand, in case of labour troubles. The system of automatic lighting Tins proved very successful, and is working to the best advantage and from a financial aspect the borough will be amply repaid for the initial outlay on the work. After visiting the works, the .reporter interviewed the Mayor. All - Gardener said thflt the council was thoroughly satisfied with the works. Mr Rurrell, the new manager, was, in the opinion of tlio council and in his (the Mayor's) opinion, a practical, conscientious and painstaking official, and lie felt perfectly certain the borough would never regret the appointment it had made. The output of gas was showing a steady incraise, and comparing November. 1912, with November, 1911, over 40,000 extra feet of gas had been made. It had been Mr Burrell'e policy to endeavour to secure consumers, and in this he had been very successful. No less tlion twenty consumers had been added during the four months the new manager had been in office, and the total number of consumers now was 255. The Mayor added that very little difficulty was experienced in disposing of the by-products, and altogether the gas works were a credit to the town.
