Local and General
A remarkable case of calves coming into milk occured locally. Two halt-bred Jersey calves, belonging to Mr H. B. France, had been accustomed to suck caclr others teats after being feci from tlic buckets. They continued this practice, ami when yearlings, brought each other into milk. They stood head and tail in the paddock, and sucked-each other and drank each other's milk. They, were separated and dried off. and came into milk naturally after calving at two year old. They are sleek, well-grown beasts now, anil milking well. The preliminary lacteal period docs not seem to have hurt them. In fact, Mr France is of tho opinion that they have been improved as milkers. The County Offices (Levin) are to be closed from 2-1 th .December to 6th January. -Mies M. Campbell lias been appointed a probationer in Levin Public School and Mr James Cooper has received a like appointment. Jt happened iu front of a country post office. Ail old farmer was holding his frightened team while an automobile rushed by. "Queer how horses are so skeered of them tilings," said one of the loafers ."Queer?" grumbled the farmer; "what would you do if you should see my pants coming down the street witli nothing in the?" Fire broke out last evening about 10 o'clock in a house in .Bath street, Levin, formerly occupied by Mr Mudgway, but now untenanted. The building, the property' of P.rouse ! Brothers, was partly destroyed 'before the arrival of the fire brigade. The fire broke out again about seven o'clock this morning, but the application of copious supplies of, water quickly averted danger. The alarm in the first instance was given by Mr Hugh Hall, who rang the bell vigorously. There is « growing feeling that the rabbit in Australia is not, after all, the curse it was represented to be, but rather a huge asset. In this country to-day we see him in many disguises. Thousand of ladies are dependent upon him for cheap but handsome fur« under whatever name they may be sold; and equal number wear "kid" gloves made from his skin; and many others enjoy "game" for which he is entirely responsible. lie is in strong and rapidly growing demand, and much of the objection to his existence is being broken down by sheer weight of fact and merit. Last year the United Kingdom imported from New South "Wales 5. J f million pounds' weight of rabbit. Tn fact, the rabbit gives lucrative employment to thousands of workers. Ho was passed the stage of fighting for his existence. He is an established "industry." Sufferers from Chronic Rheumatism, Sciatica, Lumbago and such like complaints, who are interested in the "Oxypathor" treatment, can secure machines and see testimonials at C. S. Keed well's Pharmacy.— Advt.
