Tobin were charged with threatening behaviour in Main-street on i)th November. Thero w«s no appearance of Tobin. Senior-Sergeant -UcKinnon deposed that he heard the word "scab" used. Tobin and Swears began lighting, which witness stopped. The conduct of the strikers was a continual howl. Epithets such as "scab." etc., were commonly used in the public streets. Tho police wvvo. unable to cope with the men. and they were sinnnioncd, hut prelViTod gaol rather tban observe the law. Tiie women wore just as bad. They did not coniino themselves to insulting language, but also threw stones and rotten eggs. Witness had a narrow escape, being struck on the head with a stone as big .'is a fist in Main street. He remonstrated on several occasions with the strikers and women, and the reply was, "Take your dirty seoundrels off the streeot" (meaning police). Witness said that Delancy and his wife received shocking treal,mont when they had not given the slightest provocation.
