Levin Ladies Hockey Club.

4 —:—. ANNUAL BALL. One of the most successful balls that lias ibocn held in Levin for a long time was that of the Levin Ladies Hockey Club, which v«as given last evening in tlio King's Theatre, Oxford street. During the day members mid friends of the club had been busily engaged in preparing the hall for dancing and in tarrying out decorative work. The stage was charmingly set out with some splendid 'arum lilies -and ferns, with sete.es and easy chairs in the back ground. On both sides the stage was flanked by flowers mud foliage and tiers of seats around the hall, were cushioned. Supper was served behind tli stage, the tables were prettily laid out, and indeed the whole of the arrangements showed that the committee had studied every detail to ensure the success of the gathering. The floor was in splendid condition for dancing, memhers of the Men's Club assisted by tho proprietary, having sipent hours on its preparation. Tho proceedings opened with a grand march, i which formed a pretty spectacle, and when dancing was at its height , the scene was a very Animated one. ; Mr "W. Broughton and Mr "Wehipeihana. acted as M.C.'s, and kept the company moving merrily unli* . past.,'-three o'clock thisi morning to . the excellent music of Messsr Koars- ; ley and Sloan. An interesting lit— , tie function took, place before supper when the Mayoress (Mrs Gar- ,> donor) who had worked herd to ensure the success of the function, presented trophies to three of the players. They were: Miss Grace Smith (Mr Walkloy's presentntto'v m silver-barked brush); for the best improved forward ; Miss Blows (Mrs G. P. Brown's presentations, a cut glass smelling bottle), for the best all round player: Miss Olive Hakaria (Mrs Gardener's presentation, a lady's hand bag) for the best improved back. Tn handing over the trophies, the Mayoress made a neat little speech, in which she congratulated those who had received trophies and also the club upon the success of tho evening's function. She made a strong appeal to the girls of the town to join the hockey clubs, and keep the game up to .1 high level. During the proceedings the proprietary of the King's Theatre projected on to the screen a dramatic film, entitled "Their only son," and this proved an interesting item. Throughout, the ball was a conspicuous success, and this must be very gratifying to all those who wore associated with the arrangements, especially including Miss Ambler, who from first to last nas indefatigable in her efforts. Tli" stage furniture was kindly lent by Harvey and Co., (if Oxford street, and W. Palmer, of Oxford street.
