Sand Drifts.
POSITION AT i/KVIX. The 'I'riiui' .Minister, lion. T. Mackenzie, yesterday promised a deputation from the Levin Chamber of (.'oiiimeice that he would .-end an oflicor of tilt! Department of Agriculture, as soon as lie could be spared, to report on the sand drift (jiiostion at Levin. Mr H. l». Gardener said tlnat during the last twenty years the sand bad been continually driven in until now (here were many thousands ol acres of it. It seemed to him that 2000 acres of this land (jlorowhenua Mock) coubl l)e liought from the natives at a price not exceeding ~>s an acre. If the natives were approached by the Government they might agree to the purchase money being devoted to tree planting. The matter was a verv serious one. Mr 1 , '.. S. Lancaster, president of the Levin Chainhi-r oi' (.'idimieree. said that, the Levin residents looked upon this sand drift with fear and trembling. If the growing of lupin on the land were followed up hv treeplanting good would result. It might then lie used for military training or other purposes. The Hon. Mr Mackenzie said he had already discussed this matter with Mr I'obertson. inetnher for the district, and would vi<ii the locality himself if he- could spar<> the time.
