JBVENTB IN SHANNON. (Chronicled by our Resident Representative 1 The weather throughout the holidays was showery, but notwithstanding this business on Christmas Eve was very brisk. Christmas Day and Boxing Day were quietly spent in the town. The bowlers were in evidence on the green on Boxing Day, while other sjiorts made for the Palmerstom North races. The win of Waipaku in the Cup enriched Shannon by a ■good many pounds. The local sports hacked the mare heavily. RIFLE SHOOTING. The Rifle Club members had, a day's shooting for the Kirkland trophy. The information about trains for the Palmerston races on Boxing Day was wholly supplied by the local railway officials, who were, under very trying circumstances, eourtesv itself. The same mnddloment took place at Awapuni. Matters were onlv made clear after a consultation with Mr F. Cording, a Palmerston North official who had temporary [ charge at Awapuni. Mr Cording is an old stationmaster in whom the ■Shannon people have much' confidence. He put matters clear and right. THE OLD SHANNON POST OFFICE HANDED OYER FOR A LIBRARY AND READING ROOM. The Hon. D. Buddo, in an official letter to Mr Field, conveyed the information that in answer to his letter of the lOtih August last forwarding a petition praying for the tending over of "the old Post Office building. He has approved of the handing over the premises as a Coronation grant. A pufblic meeting will be held in Shannon at an early date to consider the necessary steps to he taken.
