The Bishop of London's address to the Church Congress appears on page 4, also the Wycliffes Preachers' prtxtest. Rev. D. C. Bates' weather foreoast states that present indications are for unsettled and cloudy weatiher with rain in all parts of "the country.. Strong northerly winds are probable generally and a falling barometer everywhere for a low .pressure area likely to pass in the South during the next 48 hours. A Hastings pastry cook hit upon a novel idea to advertise f<j a boy His window was dressed with very tempting-looking Christmas cakes On Thursday morning he put a card in the midst of the cases with t!he Wowing inscription: "Wu;\-»1 a boy." Needless to say in the afternoon the post was filled with tiie card withdrawn.
On Boxing Day, Mr Park, if Levin, was driving a party up the [ Ohau river, and' at a narrow place on the roadi 'he tlhought it best for all to get out and walk for fear of accident. He took t!he horse by the bridle, and was leading it when something caused it to pull back and on© wheel going over the bank the horse and trap followed. It was a- rather steep declivity, but • the sides were covered with shrubs and young trees, and in the descent the horse and vehicle were and held fast. The splashboard and a shaft were broken, and tJhe horse somewhat injured, but when all was got upon the road again there was a thankful feeling that nothing worse bad happened.
The fact that Cuba sent King George a coronation gif -, i» the shape of 10,000 of the finest Cuban cigars, valued at about i'LOOw, which works out at ab-mt '8s a smoke ,reminds one th:«l the !ai> ITing Edward was a connoisseur uf cigars. _ Shortly before hi* death 1 His Majesty placed an orVr with a New York firm of tobacoo hrolvfjs for 500 cigars, wliich covi no ]«=.<? than £750. On the Hauraki Plains, in the Thames Valley, near Auckland, the Government have put down five artesian wells to depths of from 300 ft to 600 ft. A splendid supply of water has been met with .in each case, the flow rising several feet above the surface, and yielding from 4000 gallons up to 115,200 gallons per day. But, says the Herald, the water is warm stoda-water, ami the people who first drink at the crystal flow usually get a taste 'that makes , them look thoughtful for a while. As a matter of fact, although ths water can be ranked ns a first class corrective rn cases of rheumatism or Madder troubles it is not a pleasant beverage; and tho settlers have not yet cultivated a taste for it, so they depend on rain. Stock seem to like the drink even "unadulterated' and thrive on it, and .thereseems - a likelihood now" that the district is carrying .so manv cows that milk and soda-water will become the general product of these newly-reclaimed fertile plains.
