Heavy rain during the early lionrs of .Monday made Levin bowlers downhearted, but the weather cleared sulliciently by Monday to allow of arrangements being coni])!eted for the opening of the local ! green. Tennis of visitors 'had been i expected from Koxton, .Skniinon and ' lvlian.dall.ah, but owing to the widoj .spread nature of the downpour, no j vi'-i'.c.rs arrived. However, a. good j'muster of local bowlers occupied itlio green clnrin.jj; tbe afternoon, and some of the ladies of Levin 'bad the pleasure of a short game. The sea- ! son wa.s declared open bv the nrejsidcMil (Mr W. Park) in a ,hrppy ■sncecli of commendable brevity, and tbe first jack was thrown along the green by the Mayoress (Mrs 1L K. Gardener) amidst applause. Afternoon tea was .served by iho lady members of the club, and wa.s keenly enjoyed bv tbe bowlers one and all. Th" (banks of the directors and members are extended to tbe tidies fir these and other services. The. pleasure of the cithering was enhanced by the provision and ereelion of .n canvas tea room, for wliieh the members' best thanks are due Li Messrs Smart and McTntyro. who were early astir and assiduous noon their task. The turf, notwithstanding the night's rain, played fairly fast and very tnie, »'iwl bowlers are congratulating themselves upon the evident fact that a firstclass green is assured for the season. Two rink games were slaved during the afternoon. Pollock's men wore ptfe-1 -.-ninst Park's, and l!<oe''s against Palmer's. The learns first named won in each instance, after enjoyable contests.
