LOCAL EDUCATION.
To the Editor. Sir,—Just a line re the latest extra subject with experiments at our District High School. I consider this almost a waste ol' time for the everyday three R's are being fatally neglected. To prove it: during the last 15 years many lads have left the above institution and not one "boss" in twenty is satisfied with their proficiency in mental arithmetic, simple measurements, penmanship, or bills of parcels they attempt to make out: and as for a good clean receipt for cash received, less discount deducted this latter invariably puzzles them. There a<"e other brandies of practical knowledge. For instance, let the schoolmasters take the boys out and measure up some of tlie adjacent- paddocks and give their acreage, or work out father's drq'.'.o due t-a day on milk .supplied hist, month — for weight and test of milk is known l-'nr weeks before—or heft: r still, whm we are so near a p i t, get a hrr] of cases shy from Clark's -ai'd how many tons measurement t'r'-r----are in same. —Yours, et"., "WELL-WlSH''"]'
