EVENTS IN SHANNON

FOOTBALL
Tho football H"i Mai v. Shannon; was to ihave taken pkco on Saturday. Tlio Hui Mai team journeyed to Shannon for this purpose, lint on ariival at tho ground it was found that only ki few of iiho local team was in attendance.. After some delay, the Shannon team consented to forfeit. • Tho visitors, those, of tho Shannon toam present and others formed sides and played a scratch match, which was a very tame affair, tho Hui Mai team wining. In connection with tin's fixture, it was surely bad management to allow the Hui Mai fifteen to journey to Shannon to meet with such disappointment. Dr. Adams •has also a just complaint in so far as lie cnnie iill the way from Foxton to act as referee. The doctor rofereed in the scratch gamo, in which capacity ilio showed his tboromgh knowledge of the rules of th-o game. The Shannon school boys .journeyed to Tokoma.ru, and played a game with' tho boys of the school of that township. The home team won by G points to nil. The Shannon team played four short and soon after play commenced they were doomed to be further reduced, as Master A. Carter, one of their best players fell with his hand under -him and broke a small bone in the. wrist. (He is now progressing favourably). The Tokomaru School Committee treated the visiting lads hospitably: they were invited to dinner a.t Guy s Buffet. On Saturday afternoon, by the invitation of 'Mrs Carter, who has charge of tho Sunshine Guild, a number of visitors attended a meeting of the Guild. The occasion was airessav competition by tho members The subject was "Tho Sunshine Guild." There were six competitors. The papers were very creditable productions. Mrs bibson, who .acted as judge, bad a difficult task to perform. She awarded first prize to Miss Lillian Carter, and for second Miss Thelma Howe and Lily Foster tied. Some of tho visitors contributed songs and musical items. Afternoon tea was supplied by Mrs Carter, who in lier unassuming and unostentatious way is n verv charming hostess.
