Richards and James Prouse. accompanied by tlie County Council engineer and a number of interested citizens, on Saturday afternoon visited tbe plantation between Buller's Estate and the State Farm wbich stands on tli© paper site of the proposed public roadway. It is satisfactory to be able to record that they bit upon a practicable way of obviating any destruction of the plantation, but whether this can be put into execution with the sanction of all 'interested parties is quite another matter. Nio doubt there will be developments in the course of iuwjither day or two. An important resolution was adopted at the Horowhoniia County Coulnoil's meeting om Saturday in connection with the raising lof aloan. Mr A. H. Ro.Ho. the Otaki sheep hreeder, confirms tho reported prosperity in New South Wales, and the booming state of affairs in Sydney. Tn the city the demand for labour is quite- unsatisfied, rents are abnormally high, and houses aro almost impossible to bo obtained. Mr Hollo considers that the price of rural land when its relative inferior carrying capacity is borne in mind, is considerably dearer than in NewZealand.
Considerable perturbation has been occasioned among the surface, men at the decision of the County Council giving thoin a monfh's notkie, and calling for appliieatimns for the vacancies. No doubt the large majority will he taken an again, though it is quite possible, some of the hands will find their services not required after four weeks , time. The unfortunate ones will he those to whom Cr. Stophenson alluded' as "riding on their bicycles, 'to work,' with a gun instead of a shovel"—and this despite _ the County Clerk's jocose interjection that "'they wore possibly only going to shoot ratepayers!"

A meeting of fruitgrowers was held at Waimate recently to consider the refusal of the Government to make eoncossioas in the railway rate for return of empty crates. .It was pointed , out that it cost inoro to iiyt t>nek tliu i.-mplv rr.iltw I'li.jn Lvt forward the fruit. One. speaker stated that bottles from breweries were returned Uvo- in crates, though the empties weighed almost as much as the full consignments. After a long discussion it was decided to again petition the Minister and 28 of those present signed a petition. A suggestion to form a fruitgrowers' association wa.s not acted upon.
One of the most interesting of Into snlos was tlint of a farm on tlio Main South road, towards flays the Farmer. Originally the far in was of 31.3 acres, and since hcitic*; cut ii]) it is now carrying four families, which is another instance of the rapid tendency towards close •settlement in Taranaki. The- four prices averaged CM los per acre. One patch of oO acres, with nothing on it but a live, fence and no sub-di-visions, Hi an,sod hands at CfiO per acre-. This is one of the finest pieces of grass land in Taranflki, and the absence of all improvements allows us (says the ITawcra Star) to act a correct view of the value which buyers and sellers placed upon tlio flctnnl soil. Tt is reckoned tliat the ■")() neves will carry 10 cows, and of the -">0 acres probably five will 'bo broken up each year for cultivation.
A Domestic. Workers' Union has been formed in Auckland. Speaking at the meet in , * at which til in Union was formed, Rmily Nicol, who had been investigating the conditions of employment, said that she had been to one place where a breakfast for twelve liad to be got readv by 7 a.m.. in addition to which the servant had to perform all the attendant work. The hours of work were from 0 a.m. to 8 p.m., and all for 12s fid to los ]w week. The food supplied to some .servants was beyond description. On occasions Gutter of the worst class was bought for the maids, and instead of fresh milk the,v Ikhl to be content with skim milk. Also the_ furnishing supplied to the retiring rooms of the girls was not what it should be. The bedsteads were decrepit find tottering—-no wardrobes, no toilet requisites, small, insanitary rooms, and insufficient bed covering.
