EVENTS IN SHANNON

(Chronicled by our Resident Representative.)

Coronation Day was not- observed as a holiday in the town, the shops being closed yesterday instead. The flax mills closed for Coronation Day and! yesterday. Rev. Palmer conducted the Coronation service as prescribed by the Ardhbishop of Canterbury and York. The Miranui and Whitanui mills celebrated the Coronation with a football match. There were a large number of spectators, excitement ran high, large imaginary 'bots were made. The game proved to be a one-sided affair, as -Miranui won by 33 points to nil; thus Miranui regained the laurels lost in the previous match. LAWN TENNIS INVITATION SOCIAL. lai tlvo evening the Lawn Tennis Club social was held. There were about (thirty couples present. Before the dancing there was a euchre tournament. Mrs Thompson, a visitor from Otaki (Mrs 'j nompson before her marriage was Miss R-uth Smith, and brought up in Shannon) won the ladies' prize, and Mr Gunning secured first place in the gentlemen's contest. Miss O'Connor received the ladies' booby prize, and All* Tilling in like manner distinguished himself for the gentlemen. The following ladies and gentlemen were respectively presented with the trophies won by them during the season, viz: For the doubles, Miss Smith and Mr Barclay; singles handicap, Air C. Dunckley ; sealed: handicap, Mr C. Dunckley; junior handicap, Miss Linsell; ladies' handicap, Miss Asquith. After the euchre, tournament dancing was indulged in till early morning. Mr W. Schmidt acted as M.C. and! carried out his duties in. a manner that left nothing to be desired. The floor presented a picturesque sceno with all the beautifully dressed ladies whirling with their partners in the mazes of the waltz. The following is a description of the dresses worn:—

Gunning, blue nuislin; Miss Curran, green silk, striped voile ; Miss Butt, heliotrope muslin; Mrs Brom'ley_, saxe blue silk 11 inon ; Mrs Moynihaji, black satin; M'rs Kirsv, black, Mrs La.ui"vig, black; Mrs Ford, black; Mrs Smibli, cream; Mrs Gunning, cream; Mrs O'Connor, navy blue; Mrs Doyle, cream; Mrs Terry, cream ; Mrs Wiltshire, black. The committee deserve the greatest praise for the satisfactory manner iu wlriVh t:he affair was managed, and a word must be .said for Mr Gardiner, the energetic secretary, wiho was courtesy itself. OTHER MA ITERS. At 2.20-a.m. on Fri 'ay tihere was a severe shock of earthquake. During the night extraordinary 'heavy rain fell. Next Wednesday afternoon, there will be an interesting football match. The grocers of Shannon will play the butchers. For the grocers Messrs Thomson, Murray, Ford, Hook, Tilling, Perry and Brown, (with Messrs W. H. Gunning audi T. Gibson as emergencies), and for the butchers Messr J. Bovis, J. Martin, R. Armstrong, F. King, L. Richardson and Murgway (witlhi Messrs J. Richardson and W. Carter as emergencies). This will be an interesting match, especially if .the emergency men are called on to .play. Mr Exair will be asked to act as referee.
