THIS WEEK'S HOLIDAYS.

A DEPARTMENTAL CIRCULAR

Constable Bagrie, the local Inspector of Factories, has received the following circular from the Labour Department:— Department of Labour, Wellington, May 25, 1911. In reference to tbJc- obserfanee of the Sovereign's Birthday, June 3:— As there appears to be some- misapprehension in regard to the observance of this holiday, 1 have to explain as follows your your information :— (1.) In regard to the Public Holidays Act: Although there was a proposal made that under the Public Holidays Act certain holidays, including the Sovereign's Birthday, should be Mondayised, this proposal was not carried into effect as far as •Hie Sovereign's Birthday was concerned. Under the Public Holidays Act the only holidays Mondayised are Labour Day. which is to be observed on the fourth Monday in October, And Dominion Day, which is to ho held on the fourth 'Monday in September. If the Sovereign's Birthday occurs on a Sunday, itmust bo observed on the following Monday. Hie same applies to Christmas Day ami New Year's Day, in which case Boxing Day is to be held on Tuesday . (2.) In the Shops and Offices Act, under section 19. it will be seen that none of the holidays mentioned are compulsory for shops. All that is provided therein is that if any shop-keeper wishes to do so he may observe his usual weekly halfholiday on the afternoon of any of the public holidays mentioned in the same week. Thus in the case of the Sovereign's Birthday, shopkeepers may observe their ordinary weekly half-holiday on the afternoon of Saturday. June 3rd, instead of on the regular day. (3.) In regard to the Factories' Act: As no doubt von are aware, under section 35, all females and all boys under eighteen must he given the Sovereign's Birthday;and tJhe other holidays mentioned in that section. These holidays must be given in addition to the regular weekly half-holiday (which is on Saturday, unless the day is changed to tlio day observed by shops naider section 3(5). " (4.) In regard to awards and industrial agreements; the provisions of any award or industrial agreement relating to the Sovereign's Birthday must, of course, be complied with by the parties to same. J. LOMAB, Chief Inspector.
