WHAT IS A HEIFIIR?

To the Editor. Sir,—l think the definition given in The Chronicle of Saturday 'ast, by Mr Primrose McConnell, is correct : — At birth: heifer-calf or cow-calf. Ist year: yo-ar-old heifer. 2nd year: two-year heifer. 3ixl year: three-vear-old heifer, but becomes a cow on bearing a calf. When any animal comes to a maternal state its status alters, from the human being down. Therefore, when a young heifer has a calf she is recognised as a "cow" in. I think, all countries. We never _ hear of any country having "milking heifers." The agricultural return form (taken along with the census paper) contained no column or place for " milking heifers." T think circumstances, and not age, always alters status in life. _ For argument, say there are twin sisters. Say one of them marries at 16. She is tlien recognised as a "married woman," while tho other sister will still be a "maid: or girl." We say a three, or a four-year-old filly, but if it has a foal we call the filly "a mare," and we might go on quoting other cases bearing on, the subject.—Youre, otc., E. M. HERRTCK.
