EVENTS IN SHANNON.
(Chronicled by ouir Resident Repre sentative.} On Thursday one inebriate was brought before Mr G. N. Wood, J.P., charged with the results of an overdose of "White Mackay." He was mulcted in the usual amount for first offenders. Yesterday (Good Griclay) at the Qhluiroh of England and Roman Catholic Church services were held. In the evening sacred pictures were exhibited, at the Druids' Hall to an appreciative audience. Mr Jno. Mitchell and Mr G. N. Stephenson, two of our worthy settlers ,have been appointed Justices of the Peace. Th'c concert in aid of the Library Fundi and Reading Room will take place on the 3rd May. Special efforts are being made to give the Shannon public a. thorough good night's entertainment. The object is a worthy one, and the tickets are being readily sold. Mrs and Miss Lauryig have gone up the Main Trunk line for a fortnight's holiday. Many workmen in Shannon are thoroughly disaippointed at the attitude of the Advances •to Workers' Department. The excuse that there are empty houses in Levin is considered to be so ridiculous that anger is turned to mirth. Tiro fact that tho Seifert Co. has invested: what must he getting on for a quarter of a million in flax and a Government de-. partment is afraid to risk a total of about £2000 or £3000 on security of 40 per cent, margin is a poorjrceommendation for the importation of more immigrants.
