MADE IN GERMANY
AN AUSTRALIAN PROTEST.
[PV KLKCTRIC TELEGRAPH-COPYRIGHT.] rPER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received) This Day, 9.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. A deputation from the Chamber of Manufacturers waited on the Postmister - General and protested against the acceptance of a German te:rler for steel pipes in preference to Australian cast iron pipes. They argued that if Australia was granted th? same labour conditions as Germany, the local tenders would bo verv different.
If Germany continued building Dreadnoughts Australian money should not help. Mr Thomas (Postmaster-General), replying, said that a preference of 15 per cent, added to the Customs duties in considering tenders for imported articles, suited "better thnki any other proposals. It also meant saving a. thousand pounds. Tt seemed to him the only one coursc top^n.
