Theft of Butter.
> A young man named Arthur William Hocking pleaded guilty in the Police Court,, Hawera, to having during the nionth of December stolen twk> pounds of ibuifcter, of the value of 2e, tine property of the Riverdale Dairy Factory Company. Constable Oloueton said that accused was arrested practically on has own admission. He was until lateily employed a.t the factory. The manager reported that there was a shortage K>f butter and -suspicion rested on accusod, who subsequently stated that he had taiken ia couple of pounds into town. Accused, in a written statement, mentioned it was a common practice among dairy factory employees to take butter from tihei factory. Mr Canning enquired if this was really so. Accused: Yes, your "Worship. Mr Canning: It is a very loose one. Hβ added that if all employees were allowed to take butter from the factories ( then there was sure to be a shortage; 1 Constable Cloustbn said the manager of the company had informed him that it w&s not thet practice. The* Bench took into account accused's honesty in admitting; the offence and imposed a fthe of £!, and cautioned Mm to be more careful in the future.
