THE QUESTION OF AbATTOJKS
AND COW-TESTING
The committee appointed to inquire into abattoirs and c;.w-testiir_ liold a mooting at the C moil Offices, Oxford street, last c filing. Di McKenzie presided, and ; '.nse present were: Messrs H. J. Richards. W. Wilson, France, SmniL Lanc-f: tor and the Mayor L»ir B. !i. (l:\rdonor).
Mr Richards moved: That in u.. opinion of this committee, as tl: population of Mie borough is now about 1800, and as the time is fast approaching when the population will be 13000, at which , time the obligation of constructing abattoirs becomes mandatory, we strongly recommend to the Borough Council the advisability of establishing .abattoirs at the earliest possible moment. Mr D. Smart seconded tho motion, which was agree, to. The Mayor moved and Mr Lancaster seconded the following motion which was adopted: That the secretary be requested to write to Stratford. Hawcra ajid Feilding and ask for information on the following points: CI) the, area of land used by the abattoirs; (_J the area in which the slaughtering of animals extends to, and to what airea can be the slaughtering extended to if the T/evin Borough Council build abattoirs. Mr Franco moved, and Mr Smart seconded, the following resolution, which was adopted : That the secretary lie instructed to write to the Department of Agriculture asking for information about the cow-test-ing association already established, and what assistance, if any, coiiki be given to an association' to be formed in Levin.
The following resolution, move., by Mr Lancaster, seconded by Mi France, was also carried: That thf general committee lie lecomniendeu to organise a cow-testing association in this district, (.wing to tin great number <if useless cows till at are being milked, with very lit tl t profit to the place.
