Stoddard, a bookmaker, sued the Daily Mail, the Evening News, and the Weekly Despatch (of the Associated newspapers, and- all owned by Maron Xoiihcliffe), for publishing what was alleged to be a libellous record of his life after his conviction in tin l coupon frauds last year. This conviction was subsequently quashed on a technical point. The defence was justification and "that plaintiff had been engaged in a long career of swindling, and was several times "warned off" racecourses. The rider of Stoddard's horse, Red Rube, swore that he was instructed not to win. A verdict was returned for the defendants.
