LEVIN BOROUGH COUNCIL.
COST OF SUSPEXSrOX BRIDGE. LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS. A meeting of this Council was held last evening at the Council offices, Oxford street, the Mayor (Mr B. 1?. Gardener) presiding, and the following members present:— Crs. Cameron, Prouse, Mackenzie, Arcus, Lancaster, Palmer, France and Hannan, with Mr P. W. Gold-sm-'itih (town clerk). MISCELLANEOUS. Questions dealing with the gas department, the Foxton water supply, the Levin railway station, the fire brigade, Mr Field, library, Oxford street leases are reported under our local column. COST OF SUSPENSION BRiIDGTC. Mr Cliinio presented a report upcn. tt'.i'i? tost set the suspension 'bridge in coiiiioction with tho high weseurewater supply. Ju the course of ttiis he stated: —
"I have th"e honour, in accordance Ullll jv-tn »^. M l.j i-. 1 U 4.1,„ following statement of the actual cost of the suspension bridge for carrying the 12 inch main across the Oilkiu river. A carol'ul record has been kept of the cost of the various parts to enable me to compare with the tenders, which were received. As the work progressed it was found necessary to make slight alterations and additions, which through the nature of the work, wore luiforseen at tho time of drawing the plans and specifications, therefore these same extras would have been nece»ssary even if tho work had been carried out undov contract, but in the case of contract, those extrns would have cost more t'han they did by day labour. The actual total cost of the bridge as completed is £1003 19s. 2d. This includes a sum of £104 6s 0d for extras, this amount together with the estimated sum of £28 required to pay the wage of an inspector to watdh the concreting, if the work had been carried out by contract ; should bo added to the amount of the lowest tender, which was £909, amount of extras and wages as above £102 (is fid. The amount saved by day labour £97 7s 4(1. This amount is within £28 of tho saving estimated by trie when recommending your Council to carry out the work bv day labour." Cr. "What is tho engineer's estimato The Mayor replied that it was £784. The report wns then adopted. FOOTPATH TMPROVEMF.XT. Cr. Mackenzie moved, and Cr. This was agreed to. On the motion of Cr. MeKonzie, by Cr.
