STRAXGE ADVENTURES OF A £3000 NECKLACE.
A marquiso—a member of a prominent aristocratic family—who was stopping at an hotel in the Rue de la Pflix, Paris, .discovered that her pearl necklace, worth £3000, had disappeared from her room. Supspicion fell on a messenger boy, Alfred Paul, who admitted his guilt to the police, but declared that the necklace had been taken .from him by his mother. The motliar corroborated her son's statements, while, expressing astonishniemt thalb so much trouble should be made about "a trashy little ■β-lukot." The necklace was no longer in her possession, and Mine. Paul explained thiat it looked so ctheap and ta.wdry that she had given it to her daii-erlnter-in-law, who resides in the RueSec rota n. . Mine. Paul, junior, displayed an equal contempt foir the "string of sla.ss beads." She told the police tliat she had given the necklace to her litlWo girl to wear, but as it was much too wide she Tiad removed albout half tlho beads. _ All tho 'lnissins pends were found in a box among buttons and hooks and eyes. The marquis© was sq delighted at the recovery of her traisure tihat she decided not to proseriit>ei the Paul family. Alfred was discharged with a caution.
