The Maori conference at Wailii has carried a resolution .for itho immediate constitution of a JDistriot Maori Council, which will supercede all land boards, and largely overcome the delay in the settlement 'of land. The Maori "Council has been instructed to draw up stringent rules for the suppression of the drink traffic. The speakers bemoaned the intemperance among the. rising generation, and urged that nothing but the total prohibition) of liquor from lands, vilHages and pahs occupied by Maoris would be acceptable. It was resolved that lands known as Hopu, and the Hopu mission, should 1)0 acquired, and Jthat a native town should be established there wilth a college to provide the boys and girls with a first-class secondary education.
