OTAKI DISTRICT PROSPECTS
Otaki's report regarding labour conditions, as printed in. the Labour J'oiirnal for .May, is as follows :— There has been litltle change in the condition of trade during the past month, compared with that of the previous period. Most oi the business people report that the cash takings are up to tin? average, but ■that money is very hard to get in. There are no mad or bushfelling contracts on at present, consequently there is no opening for unskilled labourers. There have beon no applicants for work during the month, and no overtime has been applied for. Building trades : Bricklaying, canptMitry and joinery, and paiintiug fair. Plumbing and gasWttting fairly busy. Woodworking trades : Cabiremaking and upholstering fair. Sash and door factories .air. Sa.wnvilling busy. Leather trades: Bootmaking (repair shops) fair. Saddlery amd hnmcssmaking busy. Clothing trades: Tailoring (order shops) fair. Retail trades generally normal. Printing fair. Coaciibuilding trades: Blacksmithing busy. Cofich and carriage building fair. Cycle- and motor trades fairly bmk. Agricultural operations: Farming, dairying, 'etc.. very good. There h'ls been an abundance of feed, and the supply of milk a.t the factories has been very largo. Miscellaneous: The <two basket factories report a good business, and fkxni/illing is still in full swing.
