Euchre tournaments between the various friendly society lodges of Levin are being advanced week by week. The latest sets-to were between the Foresters and Druids, the wearers of tho white robes and Whiter beards being beaten by a substantial margin. The Oddfellows met and defeated the Fire Brigade on the samo evening. On Thursday next tho Druids will meet, the Fire Brigade, and tho Oddfellows and Foresters will meet at tho Foresters' Hall. Tho Government is redeeming its promise to enlarge tho Levin Post office, and so make it equal /to the increased volume of business that has 001110 to it during recent years as a result of the town's rapid growth and sustained progress. Tu to-day's issue of "Tho Chronicle" tenders are called for the work of effecting tho necessary alterations. His Excellency Lord Plunket paid his farewell visit to Palmerston 011 Saturday and was presented with an address by the Mayor, on behalf of tho citizens, at the band rotunda. Tho name of Captain Ivnyvett, who has lately acquired notoriety, has also been mentioned. Word has been received by the Hawora Star of tho death of Miss Rita Bayly, daughter of the late Mr Alf Bayly. A few weeks ago she was stricken by a form of paralysis, and though she rallied bad symptoms reappeared, and death has now occurred. Airs Bayly will 'have the sympathy of a large number of friends. To lose husband and three daughters within a comparatively short space of tir.'e is indeed a grievous affliction. All owners whoso forfeits are unpaid for the Christmas meeting of tile Manawatu Racing Club are to bo put on the unpaid forfeit list. This decision was arrived at when the stewards of the club met on Thursday last.
Tho matter of .holding only a one day show in autumn, in place of two days as in tho past, was discussed, at the recent meeting of the Otaki Uorticulutral Society, and it was unanimously resolved to recommend the new committee to hold only a one-day show next autumn.
Mr Thomas Bevan, senior, of Ma.nakau, whoso condition of health during .tho last fortnight caused apprehension to his relatives and friends, has made an astonishing /recovery during the last few nays, and there is every reason to hope that he soon l will bo about again. Mrs Bevan, whose unremitting attentions to him have materially helped to restore his health, is now laid up herself, but it is hoped that a day or two of complete rest will restore her to her usual good health.
Tt is intended that a 'Maori theatrical party shall leave New Zealand early in October, and visit Melbourne. Sydney. Adelaide and Perth in suceesion. Tho object of starting the tour in Australia is to perfect tho organisation, and have the Maoris as thoroughly trained as possible when they reach England, writes the New Zealand Herald. The.party will arrive in London in the last week of March. The village will be pitched in the heart of London 'till May 20, when it will move north. Towards the winter, the party will make a short excursion into Scotland and Ireland, and then return to England. Thence they will go to the Continent and the East. The whole of the tour will occupy from two to two and a half vears.
