• —- —~ Ii E VIN - WAN DEIiER 12 v. HUI AlAl 0. A return friendly game was played between tlio above teams on the Ijevin Jteserve on Saturday. The Manakau team, which "appeared on the ground with several .substitutes put up a good stand against their opponents. At .times some fair form was shown by some of the players, but .the majority were not in match condition. As cup matches commence on Saturday 'next it behoves those players to put in some solid training during this week so as to get into fairly decent form. The Levin backs got going wiith one or two good passing bouts at .times, but as the forwards never got the in tlio scrums they could not open up the play in an attractive manner. The visitors' hacks wore weak, most of the work falling on Ropata, Richardson, and Hopu, whose defence was very solid. The forwards grafted from start to finish ' and prevented the home team from scoring on several occasions. .Hob George, .Martin and Uori kept on continually harassing the local "backs and spoiling passing rushes. No doubt before next Saturday Hui Mai will muster most of tlieir old players, as they usually do, and make a hold hid for the championship. The home forwards included some new blood, among whom are one or two very promising players, including Pettman, "Tim" Close and Garth. ".Hilly" Wilson was out again, and clearly demonstrated that ho is itoo good a man to lie 011 the line. Saxon, Arcns, and Dixon also put in some good work, while Thorne ,011 the wing, has plenty of pace, hut requires more coaching. Coote was easily the best hack on the ground, and it would do some of the other players good to take a, leaf out of his 'hook, and do a. hit of training at night. Nepia Winiata, Lewer, McTnnis, Everett and Ryder put in sonw serviceable work , but Stuckey will havo to get a move on if he wishes to keen 11 n with his mates. Mr F. Rout made a very satisfactory referee. The scorers were: Coote a penalty goal, Lever, Garth and Wilson <1 try oach. SHANNON TEAMS IN THE FIELD. Th« return match between Koston Albions and the Shannon Clu'b took place at Shannon 011 Saturday, and resulted in .a draw. The score was three poinlts each, Grimstono scoring a try for the local club and Winiata. doing likewise for Fox ton. Hot.li teams had a strong sido in the field, consequently the play was fast and exciting throughout, the ball travelling up and, down the field without any decided advantage to either side. The teams were very evenly matched. The visitors' backs wore not so conspicuous as in the previous match between these teams; the local backs, however, played most creditably, their occasional passing bouts and.spoiling tactics proving very effective. Of the hacks, Dunne (F«xton), and Grimstone, Pope and Stevenson (Shannon) were most conspicuous, while among the forwards Winiata (Foxton) was a. host in himself. For Shannon Dalzell and Rapu were tho pick of a. very even lot. M r F. Foster was an impartial referee. The Shannon juniors met tho Foxton Albion juniors at Foxton, but were defeated by 10 to nil. Considering that several of the local team were making their first appearance, they diid very well. A 111 eating of the Referees' Associate nwill he held in the "Chronicle" office on Thursday evening next at 8 p.lll. Referees'are asked to attend as tho new alterations to the rules.will he discussed, thereby securing a uniformity ■of uulings throughout the district.
