HURRICANE AT FIJI.
[I'Kit PI! KSS ASSOC [ATION.] AUCKLAND, April 21. The Island mail brings additional particulars of the damage done by the recent hurricane in Fiji, the most serious feature being the loss of eight lives at the Rewa. The unfortunates were all natives. Enormous damage was sustained by the banana crops there, and some 7000 acres of sugarcane has been levelled, while the houses were all more or less damaged. It is estimated that the damage done to the cane and bunana crops will amount to over !;S(),000. hi various districts where rubber trees have been planted the trees have been destroyed. The Methodist .Mission at the Rewa sustained damage amounting to about C.'iOOO, and much damage was done to the crops. At Xavua the damage to bananas is put down at .-£12.000, while at Mliau and other villages in the neighbourhood, some .'3OO houses were, destroyed, .and a woman was killed by a house falling on her. fn the Rewa province 7!)o houses were blown down, and at Dieketi a woman was killed hv a falling house. The losses sustained by the Methodist Mission throughout the groups are estimated at about .£">000.
