Superphosphates.
The list , of superphosphate lor crops sown nt any time in the year cannot he too strongly rwoinmemlecl. One of the great points about superphosphate i.s its power of pushing on plants in the first stages of growth. Therefore, if it i.s applied to autuimi-sown crops it iMiahlivs, or helps, the plants to get a good start, and a firm rotoing before the winter frosts set in. If it is used with spring-sown crops, it pushes up the plants cjiiic-kly so that they are well advanced when the drying winds make their presence felt. The be.st way of applying superphosphates is to drill it with the s:>ed. so that tin , roots of the .young plants can quickly assimilate it. It h>as been proved that superphosphate gives the best results wluvii drilled just under the. seed. Most drills, however, provide for its going in with the seed, and this seems to answer all purposes very well. Kven in goorl land tho application of manure has been found useful in the direction of strenigtheiiing thy straw, enabling it to stand better, and also by causing the grain to ripen ten days or a fortnight earlier than it would otherwise do. Mineral superphosphates have been found very useful on shallow, clay soils, inclined to be waterlogged, niuT cold in the spring. There are. however, several other kinds of superphosphates, and those manures manufactured rind sold by the meat companies have been proved to be thoroughly efficient and reliable. They are used very extensively.
