LEVIN RAILWAY STATION.

PROG HESS OF THE WORK

•SOME .IXTE'KEiSTI'XG DETAILS. The work in connection with tlio erection of a new railway station and goods yard at Levin is making progress, and it is hoped that within four months the whole of tlio operations will be concluded, and that in foin''weeks time the station itself will he completed. About lilty men have been engaged on the work, hut some 20 were temporarily paid off yesterday 011 account -of the engine which draws the ballast train, being required for other purposes. The platform will be raised slightly higher than the existing one, and will be (500 feet long by 20 feet broad. The building will consist of a ladies' waiting room, a public waiting room, booking offices, parcels offices, and the usual conveniences. At the present timo the work of painting the outside is being proceeded with, and this will be finished within a fortnight. Carpenters are busy finishing the roofing, and the lining of the interior will only occupy about a week longer. The cement work connected with the platform has taken about a fortnight up to now, but it is anticipated it will he finished by "Wednesday next week. The goods shed has been erected over one of the lines, so that in future trains only partly unloaded may he "locked in" at night. Hitherto tlio practice has been to cover them over with tarpaulins. A new shunting line is also being laid down. The main line will, of course, run alongside the platform, but in future there will be loop lines sufficient to allow of dealing with five trains instead of two or three, as at prosent. This will greatly facilitate passenger and" goods traffic. A heavier type of rail is* being substituted for the existing 0110 from Wellington, and the metals tare laid almost as far as Levin, while the permanent way is being improved south of Palmerston. Tt should be added that a bookstall is also' being erected. This is being built into the new station.
