SCULLING.
AIiXST WHELCH
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] OH R JSTCHURCH, This Day. Broken weather has hampered Arnst and Whelch in their training operations, but Whelch went over the full course on Saturday, and Arnst did likewise on Sunday. The Akaroa mail seems to be in wonderful condition, but is a bit too line to please some experts, but, nevertheless, local people speak enthusiastically of his prospects. Arnst, on the' other hand, seems to be going lazily on the water, although once or twice he has electrified shorewatchers. As a rule lie has contented himself with long, steady work, pulling a regular 21 or 22, and occasionally increasing his stroke to 25. When Whelch went over the course he paddled a couple of miles, quickened to 26 and finished up at 30 over the last half-mile. The final deposit is to be paid on Monday, and the course is to bo definitely settled oil Thursday of next week.
