DISTRICT NEWS.
NOTES FROM SHANNON. ("■Vritten by the. "Chronicle's" Local Representative.) Mr G. N. Eugles, of East road, left hero on Monday for Wellington. He sails this week by the s,s. "Tainui" for England, and expects to be nwsiy about twelve months. t The. recent Presbyterian Horticultural Show held here cleared C4O, after all expenses "were paid. This is to be spent in repainting the church and asphalting the footpaths. A pleasing feature at matins at the Catholic Church on Sunday was the splendid singing. The occasion being Palm Sunday, the choir was largely augmented by a. number of visitors who are at present staying here for the purpose of assisting at the bazaar for Mother Mary Aubert's Home. They also assisted at a sacred concert oiv Sunday evening, in the Druids' Hall, for tho same good cause. ft seems to your correspondent that n noticeable thing in Shannon is the apathy of the members of the Church of England as regards their churchyard. While the other churchyards are nicely fenced and prettily planted with shrubs, the English Church remains neglected and sadly in want of a decent fence. A large number of tickets have been sold for the fancy dress ball to be held on Easter Monday night. The Entertainment Committee are working hard and sparing no expense to make this the event of the season. On Saturday the Rifle Club commence their first shoot for the coveted "Vile Cup." The scoring on the occasion was phenomenal. Tokomaru has been gay this past week. On Monday the Debating Soiety had a ladies' night, and at the conclusion of the debate (the subject on the occasion being "Which is the Greatest Cause of Crini": Wealth, Ignorance or Poverty?" Mr H. Smith presented the Rev. J. A. Mackenzie, on hehnlf of tho Society, with a travelling rug, as a mark of,their esteem. Mr" Mackenzie formed this Society about ten months ago, and is shortly leaving for a trip round the world. . On Wednesday, at "Spring Creek," the residence of Mr Earl Wilton, the Rev. J. A. Mackenzie had the pleasure of officiating at a double wedding. The contracting parties were Annie Ja,ne, eldest daughter of Mr Wilton, and Horaee,"third son of Mr J. W. Burge. of Hastings; also Edith May. second daughter of Mr Wilton, and Robert, youngest son of Mr John Guy, of 'Opunake. A large number of guests were present. The happy couples left by motor car for Shannon to catch the South bound mail for Wellington.
