SOUND ALL GOLD COINS. SPURIOUS HALF-SOVEREIGNS ... HOROWHENUA DISTRICT I Tn Levin, for certain, ami pseihly in other parts of' the HoroW'h'jiiua District also, .spurious lialfsovi!reigns fire being put into circulation by some unscrupulous narasites. The coins are exceedingly difficult to detect, for tliey are coated with sold on tlio outside, and .tin's enables them bo withstand tho acid tost. Succinctly put, they •are of the quality of rolled gold jewellery: good to gaze upon, but not as good as they se>em. There is a sure and unerring tost that they may be put to: that is, to drop them on a counter or any other solid substance, and then listen for the ringing sound that good gold gives. The spurious article has «i. dull, leaden sound. Exports i\re able, to tell the difference by making an examination of tho milled edges of the coins. Those are less carefully marked on th« counterfeit coins than they are on the genuine ones.
