St, Patrick's Day Sports.

-—» . A WERAROA FUNCTION. The first annual gathering under the auspices of the Horowhenua Sports Association was held at the Weraroa Racecourse yesterday afternoon, in beautiful weather. At the opening ceremony there was a large attendance, which was considerably increased as the day wore on, people flocking in from all parts of the district. The turf was in excellent condition, thanks to the efforts of the ground-keeper, Mr Wooding. As a result, some quick going was made. Considering this was the first meeting of the Club, the committee may congratulate itself on the number of entries. There were nine entrants for the maidon foot race, and thirteen for the 220 yards foot race. The pony races were well patronised, especially in the trot-in-saddle and trot-iu-harness, .and were held under the sanction of the New Zealand Trotting Association. The mile and a quarter bicycle race was a very finely contested event, but the greatest interest was centered in the first pony race (which was won by Mr Smith in splendid style) and the three miles motor cycle race (single cylinder). The last-named event was won by S. Brewster, in the creditable time of 7min. 22 4-osec. The Ma.iden-Trot-in-SacTdle, was another' feature of the races, and had one of the biggest fields of the day. Resides the stake the winner secured Mrs Higgins' trophy. A magnificent display of motor cycle racing was given by J. Phillips and S. Brewster. Brewster was leading at the end of the first round, then Phillips opened out, and came level at the second. Xeck-to-ncek racing ensued, but Phillips, who received an ovation, passed the winning post three lengths to the good. Both competitors were loudly applauded as they left the track. Other items of interest wore the bicycle obstacle race, and the ladies' cycle race, Miss Astridge winning in thelatter case, though her competitor made a good second. The .Band Hoys' Race was won by Lett. The Bun Eating Competition, in which there were 14 entrants, caused roars of laughter little Musgrovo securing the winning prize. The "Ancient v. Modern" bicycle race was another amusing feature. O'Donnell rode an "ordinary," and his diminutive opponent, Master .Shearsby, a modern up-to-date machine. Although O'Dounel proved himself a splendid road racer between Levin and Otaki he did not altogether shine against the little man on the _ bike! Through the kind permission of Major Burlinsou the Training Farm Baud enlivened the proceedings with some excellent musical selections. The judges were the Mayor (Mr B. R. Gardener) and Mr V. Roe: while as timekeepers Messrs E. W. Smith (manager for Mr W. L. Jeuness) and F. Glackin carried out their duties in a creditable manner. President, Mr B. R. Gardener; vice-presidents. Messrs G.
