<►- HKSSES O'-TH'-BABX HAND. It is only those who know the Midlands nnd the North of England who can realise the enthusiasm with which the minors, mill hands, and other workpeople follow the braes band movement. The famous Besses o'-th'-Barn 1 Jtnul, which opens a return season, under Messrs J. and X. Tait, at the Century Hall, Levin, on Monday evening next, at B.M o'clock, was founded over a hundred and fifty years ago. and the equally famous Hlaok Dyke Band on Queensbury, Yorkshire, has a record of half-a-century. and both liave won prizes amounting to ma.ny thou.saiKls of pounds. The band competitions are followed with the keenest interest, .and the names of the judges are not even made public*. They are accommodated on a screened platform so that they can only hear without seeing which band is playing. A few years ago they surprised the people of the North by awarding the prize to IJebburn Collie-ry, a comparatively unknown combination, thus putting that band above the Besses and the Black' Dyke. in spite of representations made to the management of the competition the latter stood by the judges, and the next vear lfeither 'the Besses nor the HI aok Dyke competed. Extraordinary devices arc resorted to in order to get effect in their bands, and it is nothing out of the way for a player with more than ordinary lip ability on one particular instrument to !>e included to play a few bars or even imn particular note. The Bosses o'-th'-Barn will give us an exhibition of brass ba.n-d playing that will be astonishintr. It must be remembered that this is a "brass" band purely, and does not use the reed or string for .any softening effect. To musicians this is the extraordinary part of it.
