(Prom, the Daily Southern Cross, 15th December.) It is within the knowledge of our readers, that funds Have been- raised Jn] Auckland for the purpose of relieving the necessities of such of the Poverty Bay refugees as have come up to Auckland. A sum of ,moiiey was placed in the hands of Mr King, the Relieving Officer, who it was' believed would be able to; administer the funds more judiciously than any of the committee, who, however much they might have had'experience in originatipg and carrying out any benevolent >ffort, had little practical knowledge of the best way of expending rhefurids raised; "We believe that every necessitous case has been carefully attended to,, and that tlie”duty has been carried out in. a spi rit of unostentatious.. zeal.. It was,
however, fell that something more required to be done than merely providing for those of the refugees who came up to Auckland. Many of them -toNa pier from the proximity of that place to Poverty Bay, and an effort was at once made ; to supplemenf the funds already raised in their behalf. Yesterday many of the leading merchants and .citizens of Auckland; met at the Royal Insurance Company’s offices, Shortland-street, for the purpose of forming a committee, and making arrangements for. sending. ,a remittance to Napier. Air Thomas : Russell occupied the chair. It was ultimately arranged that a sum of jg2so should be forwarded to-day to liis-JEtouor Mr Donald M‘Lean, Superintendent of Hawke’s Bay, that he will administer it for the relief v of the Poverty Bay refugees. It was also intimated qhat further contributions will be forthcom ing, if required. /
