KENNEDY’S BAY GOLD-FIELD.

of the 11th May, contains tlie following :

,: ' The steamer ' Tauranga returned ; froth ,the .new gold-field at Kennedy’s >B&y last evening/ shortly after seven OicldckiK/ She left Shortland at twelve o’clock on Monday night, and arrived at Kennedy’s Bay on the following morning, , at half-past eight 'o’ clock. Mr Commissoner Mackay, the Chief Robert, Mr W. Buckland, Mr. Smart, Captain, Frazer, Mr. Macready, a large ; staff of surveyors, and several other gentlemen from Auckland and Shorthand were landed, and the steamer left again at .12 o’clock, bringing up five passengers. A large number of the diggers at Shortland were anxious to proceed.by .the Tauranga to Kennedy’s Bay, but as the ground had not been .surveyed they were not permitted to go. To-day, however, the land will be surveyed, and Kennedy’s Bay proclaimed a gold-field, so that by to-morrow we may expect a rush from Auckland and the Thames. Several small vessels have already been laid on for the new gold-field with provisions, and one or ' two gentlemen have gone down, for the purpose of selecting suitable sites for building purposes.

The same journal, in its issue of the 15th May, says:— ; The sample of alluvial gold brought from Kennedy’s Bay, has been tested and proved to be far superior in quality to. the usual run of the Thames gold. It is of 20 carat fineness.
