THE THAMES DISTRICT
KARAKA GOLD-EIELD.
(From the Correspondent of tlie New Zealand Herald.) * Shortland, Oct. 27. I am told that the Gemini, which sailed for Coromandel, as it was then understood, made a round turn on reaching the mouth of the Thames, and went straight up the river.
Except that Kelly’s claim, No. 3 on the IWonataira Creek, has yielded 99 ozs. of gold to 180 lbs weight of stuff, there is no news of any importance. I am sorry to have to report another death by drowning. A dead body, since ascertained to be that of Thomas Monro, was found early this morning in a small creek of the Kakaka Elat the deceased is well-known, as having been long attached to the shipping reporter’s department of the Cross. An inquest will, of course be held, the evidence given* at which I will send you. Oct. 28. I have been in attendance at the inquest on the body of the unfortunate man Thomas Monro, who was found drown on Sunday morning. The verdict retuned is an open one of found drowned. I send you the evidence in full. Two new claims are reported, that of Mr Thomas Waters, stationer, of Shortland which is to be called the Kilmashogue claim—l think the name is Irish, but am not quite sure—and that of Mr Robert Scott, of Queen-street, which is to be called the Ebenezer. In. both cases the quartz is rich—if I wanted to puff this gold field, T should say very rich. The Gemini came down the Thames at seven this morning, and proceeded as we suppose, to Coromandel. The Tauranga is just in, and I have but five minuces to write my despatch, as I was not aware she would go to sea at once.
Gold. —Yesterday evening Mr Beck showed a bar of gold, one of nine, which lie had cast from the retorted gold sent up from Hunts Claim. The bar weighed between sixty- and seventy ounces, and was very pretty to look at. We understand that the whole quantity will be sent up to Sydney by the s.s. Auckland.—New Zealand Herald, Oct. 30.
