NATIVE INTELLIGENCE.
(From the Daily Southern Cross, 28th Sept.) Ouii Tauranga correspondent writes that he can see no reason to modify the opinion he expressed in his last letter as to the threatening aspect of the natives in the Bay of Plenty. The occurrences of the last ; few days afford a curious instance of how rapidly news is conveyed through the interior by the natives. Yesterday we stated, from information derired from natives, ( that one of the causes of the agitation i amongst the King Maoris in the Upper ■ Thames was an intimation that had been received that the surveyors would soon" be sent. to Katikati. Our Tauranga letter published to-day gives us the fact that ! there has been some talk abo ill the matter , at 'le Papa, and very likely during the ; summer we shall have an attempt to force the survey. There are some men amongst ' the King party who have—or think they have, which comes to pretty much the same thing—a claim on parts of the land it is pretty certain that we shall have a repetion ot last - summer’s work, some £40,000 spent, not. to, mention fiye or six-men killed, in an abortive attempt tor' survey land, which, even if we did survey it, would be of no use till it was safe for people to live on it and cultivate it. The Katikati block is more exposed to the incursions oi the hostile natives than the land in the Tauranga district, from which the surveyors were driven last year. Penetaka. who is determined as ever, is resident with his people at Te "Whakamarama. It is said that the horse of the man Lewis, found dead lately on the beach between Tauranga and Maketu, bears the mark of a bullet wound, and this h s given rise to the suspicion that Lewis has been murdered. . This fact is not confirmed, however. The only place from which danger could come is Hakaraia’s old place, TV Ptike, or Canaan, but we have not heard of its being re-occupied by the hostile natives. The proceedings at Opotiki are noticed elsewhere. '
