LATEST INTELLIGENCE.

IMPORTANT FROM THE THAMES DISTRICT.

The favorite screw steamer ‘ Star of the South ’ brought up in the roads at. a late hour last night. We have to thank her courteous commander, Captain Bendall, with furnishing us with files of Auckland papers up to. Monday last. In the Daily Southern Cross of that date we find some important news from the Thames gold-fields, which we hasten to place before the public. Our contemporary says— The s.s. Midge arrived at 2 o’clock this morning from the Thames, with 208 ounces of gold from Barry’s Reef. She also brings five bags of very rich quartz from a new reef, to be crushed aud .assayed. The reports from the field are very encouraging, quartz reefs being daily discovered by prospectors, and nine claims are now producing valuable quartz. Barry’s partyhave 70 ton 9 of quartz Btacked up, taken from the leader which yields the above re. turn. The gold is found to be distributed more largely than was ever seen In Victo ria and its intrinsic value is a little over half that of the Middle Island gold.-.- Several other parties are stacking quartz, and more may be expected in Auckland by the next steamer. '

The Blue Bell, which arrived yesterday from Coromandel, reports that the quartz from Tookey’s Claim, at the Thames, had arrived there, and a portion had been crushed, yielding verV.satifactorily. -It is expecled that it will, when finished', turn outr some 250 ounces to the ton. '

It appears that the new reef or auriferous leader found at Karaka is turning out uncommonly rich specimens.

The gold from the 145 ounces of amalgam, the result of the crushing of 6 cwf. of quartz, from JSo. 1 Claim, Hunt’s reef, was ntorted on Saturday, by. Mr Hunt, and smelted into two bars by'Mi* Bock, jeweller, Queen-street. The. -amount, of gold obtained was 58' ozs. 4 dwts.,-which, together with the 10 ozs. 12 ; dwts. obtained by Mr Beck previously from a- portion of this stone,’ makes altogether 68 ozs. 16 dwts. from 6 cwt. of stone.
