NEWS FROM THE GOLDFIELDS.

(Prom the Daily Southern Cross, Sept. 12.) THE THAMES GOLDFIELDS.— HUNT’S REEF.

The first trial-crushing of the stone from this began iri town on Tuesday, when 44 oz. of amalgam were obtained from about 2 cwt. of stone. The crushing was resumed yesterday, when about double the quantity of the stone was crushed; the amalgam being in the same proportion as on the first day. The crushing will be continued to-rlay until all the stone has been got through. After the mullock was ! iun off, not more than 6 cwt. of stone remained, although it was at first reported 'that some 15 cwt. had been brought up. The amalgam will be retorted ou Friday, when we will ascertain the exact return of gold* The stone aud mullock were taken just as they lay j so that the prospect is a fair average.

The Thames goldfield is being slowly developed. At present there is nothing reported to warrant a rush. The natives are behaving very well; and there is a probability that Te Hira will open his land. We trust he may be induced to do so, for then there will be a greater certainty of the goldfield turning out payable. Five tons of good stone have been sent from one of the newly discovered reefs at the Thames to Coromandel for crushing. The 'stone is said to be rich. A sample of about 5 cwt. of gold-bearing stone is being crushed in Auckland by the prospectors, Hunt and party, from their claim. The result is not yet known. The paddle-steamer Enterprise returned from the Thames on September 9, and brings information of a more encouraging nature in connection with the working of the proclaimed goldfield. A sample of alluvial gold, containing between 3 and 4 ounces, was brought to town by Mr Holmes, of the steamer Enterprise; a good prospect has been washed from the claim taken up by Mr Mulligan, on the Waiotahi block. The prospect consisted of threequarters of an ounce of alluvial gold, washed from a sluice-box during Friday .afternoon and Saturday. The cutter Fly was about to proceed to Coromandel, with a considerable quantity of quartz from Tookey’s claim, m order that it may be crushed at the Kapanga Company’s work.s Mr. Beck, Queen-street, Auckland, handcrushed on September sth a parcel of quartz from the Sbotover claim, Thames goldfield, and obtained 8 oz. 12 dwt. of gold. The stone was not weighed.
