FIRE AT THE SPIT.
At about half past six o’clock on Tuesday evening last a fire was discovered to have broken out in a stable on the Spit, the property of G. E. G. Richard sou, Esq., adjoining the stores both of Messrs. Kinross and Co. and Messrs. Smart aud Co. The alarm was raised by one of the sons of Mr T. Jeifares, who was the first to observe the flames.
Notwithstanding that we have no organised v Fire Brigade on the Spit, there was no lack of ready and willing hands to lend assistance in checking the progress of the fire, which was spoedily accomplished by the demolition of the burning stable and part of a shed connected with it, before the fire had obtained the mastery. We are glad to be' able to say that the damage done is not of any material consequence, though had it had but a few minutes more time to spread, or had it occured a few hours later, when help could not so readily have been obtained, we fear we should have had to chronicle one of the most extensive and destructive fires that has yet oc-
cured in Napier. We would urge upon the inhabitants of the Spit the absolute necessity of immediate organisation, and the procuring of a fire engine for this locality. There is surely .no want of strong and energetic young men willing to form a brigade, and waiting only for a leader in the cause. Should it not be done, we fear that it will not be always in our power to chronicle the occurrence of a fire overcome without more extensive destruction of property and perchance loss of life.
