Tiraaru, 12th August.

A public meeting will he held tonight to petition the Assembly for separation from Canterbury, iu consequence of the rejection of the Local Government Bill. There is great excitement in town.

Hokitika, 12th August.

The tug Challenge went ashore thismorning, and is very awkwardly situated. The Yarra was not able to get out to tender the Gothenberg. The late gale has committed great havoc on the Nelson gold fields, onetown (Waite’s) having been blown away. The Claud Hamilton sailed for Sydney yesterday, carrying away 29,000 ounces of gold and fifty passengers. There is great excitement here about the gold fields in the North Island.

13th August. The steamer Alhambra has arrived from Dunedin.

The steamer Gothenburg has sailed for Melbourne, with 6000 ounces of gold. A petition in favour of separation from , the eastern portion of Canterbury has been circulated in the country, and is being numerously signed,
