ARRIVAL OF THE BETSY,

The cutter Betsy, Captain H. Trimmer, arrived in port on Saturday nigbt last, after a frightfully rough weather passage,—the .vessel, being, at times completely in the sea.s, and in imminentdanger of fonndering. She left Auckland' oii the Gth-inst., and experienced/heavy northerly weather all across the Bay .of'Plenty, in consequence of which had to be hove-to for about 20 hours. Upon the weather moderating, the vessel continued her course, and arrived-off Waiapu on the 9th inst!, but found a terrific, sea.running, in consequence, of which was unable to land any cargo. Continued her course onjtlie 10th, .and same day. experienced strong, southerly breeze, .which, gradually worked round to the N.E. Arrived at Poverty Bay at 3 p,m.,oti the 13th, lauded, two passengers, and left for Napier same night at 10 o’clock.. Two hours after leaving, experienced : a gale from the‘N.E., which, caused the little craft to labour heavily. It, blew so strong, and tlie sea was so high, the vessel was, again .hove-to —this ti me, for a day and night, at the end of which time, the wind having chopped round to'S.W., bore up for Napier, and arrived in port on Saturday.night,. August 17.. ,

ARRIVAL. OF THE. STAR OE THE SOUTH The deservedly favorite screw steamer Star of the South, Captain Vm. Bendall, returned to port on Tuesday, night last. She left Napier at 3 p.ra. on Sunday, lltli August, and experienced a heayy S.E. gale after leaving; stopped at Maliia to land Mr Watt, and then proceeded to.Tauranga, where she arrived .at midnight on.-Monday, experiencing strong northerly winds with head sea. Landed 75 head cattle and 230 sheep on . Tuesday, , and. left again for Auckland on Thursday, at 8 p.mV, arriving there at 5 p.m. on Eriday. Had strong head winds and thick weather from Tauranga. On Saturday, August 17, took on board cargo for this port, and left Auckland at. 9'30 a.m. on Sunday; had strong N.W. wind to East Cape, which was rounded at 9 a.m. on Monday. Prom thence had fresh head winds, and anchored at Wangawehi at midnight. • Took ■on ■ board Mr James Ivatt, and left for Napier at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, arriving here as above.

ARRIVAL OP THE TARANAKI. ' The s.s. Taranaki, Capt. Prancis, arrived on Saturday about 1 p.m. She left Port Chalmers for Lyttelton at 4-30 p.m; on the loth; arrived at Lyttelton on the 16th : left at 3-30 p.m. on the 17th ; arrived at Wellington on tlie 18th, at 10 p.m; - left at 3-30 p.m. on the 23rd, and arrived_ as above. She reports having met with head winds and stormy weather from Port Chalmers to Lyttelton ; the rest of the passage fine. The cutter Dolphin, Capt. Sehoiv, which left Napier on the 9th iust., arrived at Wairoa tlie following day. She. remained bar-bound, until Friday the 23rd, when she left, and arrived at Napier at midnight. Capt. Schon reports that he. crossed the bar, on which there was ten feet of water, at the same time as tlie Annie.

ARRIVAL OF THE ANNIE.

The schooner Annie, Capt. Hamilton, left Napier on the 19th, and entered the Wriroa river on the 20th.. She landed the Military Settlors, and left on the 23rd, arriving in port on the 24th.

ARRIVAL OF THE HERO.

; The schooner Hero, Capt. Campbell, left Wairoa on the 23rd at 4 p.m., and arrived at Napier about3p;m. the following day, having met with a southerly wind all night. : .She..brought four passengers, and a cargo of maize and pork. Capt. Campbell reports the arrival in Wairoa of two of the prospecting, party, who, report having found the color of gold at the head of the Wairoa. river, but not in payable quantities.
