Melbourne, July 19. The decision of the Board on the investigation of the collision between the Black Swan and Duna, steamers, has, after two days’ sitting been given; they are of opinion that the collision was caused by Webb, the master of the latter vessel, and his certificate has been suspended for nine months. It is rumored that .=£3ooo was sent to Melbourne from Ballarat for the purpose of bribing members of Parliament to vote in a particular way on the Royal Commission’s recommendations on mining reserves.
Nicholls has been found guilty of the murder of Brown at Collendina, by driving a pick through his body, and is sentenced to death. The trial of Searl and Ballan for the murder of Mr Burke has not yet concluded. Mr Aspinwall has objected to the admission of Searl’s confession as evidence.
The Tasmanian papers say that it is expected the submarine telegraph from Cape Schanck to Tamar Heads will be laid by January next; it is estimated the outlay will be .£IOO,OOO.
A fair business is doing; there is a good demand for hops, 40 pockets Tasmanian sold at 2s 8d; common to medium port sold at £23 to £4O in bond; 700 cases JDKZ geneva 10s; Hennessy’s pale brandy, iu bulk and case, at 25s 3d; shipments of Benault’s pale brandy, in bulk, at 5s 9d. The lumper Lawrence Brown brought rates equal to last week. The cargo of Mauritius sugars ex Ben Nevis was sold at auction; 3530 bags were of fered—good to fine brown, 30s 6d to 325; medium counters, 33s 3d; good to fine counters, 355; finest, 365; yellow crystals* 34s to 355; middling to good white, 37s 6d to 38s sd. Shaw’s creditors have resolved on a compulsory sequestration of the estate. There has been a meeting of the creditors of E. Herman, storekeeper, of Echuca; liabilities, £20,200; assets, £7300. There has been an assignment in favor of Mr Service and Messrs Lyall, Frazer, & Co.
Adelaide, July 19.
The Treasurer’s financial statement, made yesterday, shows a deficit of £191,000, but without deducting intending retrenchment to the amount of £150,000. Should the intended improvements he sanctioned, £2,000,000 are to be borrowed, being about £l2 per head" of the inhabitants. It is proposed to meet the present deficiency by borrowing on short-dated bonds. The balance of the emigration fund will at the end of the year "amount to £321,000. The Budget has been favorably received.
A notice of motion has been tabled in the Assembly for granting a pension to Judge Boothby.
General business is dull. There are buyers of wheat at 4s 9d, but sellers ask 4s 10|d. Sales of flour have been effected at £ll 10s.
There have been tenders issued for £50,000 of six per cent, bonds.
