TRAFFIC TO WAIROA

Deviation at Darkie’s Spur Though the main road through to Wairoa is not yet clear, traffic may avoid the slip on the Devil's Elbow by diverting at Darky Spur, on the top of Kaiwaka, and rejoining the main road beyond the blockage. Traffic from Napier has been able to get through to Wairoa by taking this course. By taking this route, drivers will have to exercise extreme care, for the Darky Spur road is narrow and somewhat tortuous. An estimate was given this morning by the Public Works Department that the slip at the Elbow, on which a number of men have been engaged, will be cleared by 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon. Beyond the Elbow the road is passable through to Wairoa. The slips at Mohaka, White Pine Bush and Matahoura have been cleared sufficiently to enable traffic to pass. From Wairoa to Gisborne the road is clear.
