MENUHIN IN SYDNEY

Another great audience, the 10th, filled the Town Hall on the occasion of the last concert in Sydney of Yehudi Menuhin. More than 30,000 people attended his Sydney concerts. Menuhin made his adieu with the Bach Chacconne, the Lalo “Symphonic Espagnole” and the “Follia” variations of Corelli, all of which he has performed during the tour. Indeed, no great player has ever run the changes on so small a repertoire during a series of 10 concerts in Sydney. Nevertheless, all the pieces he has done were superbly played, the Chaeconne and the Lalo being revelations of fine technique and interpretation. The audience at the end of the programme stood up and cheered, and refused to leave the hall until Menuhin, who appeared boyishly delighted, played several extra pieces.

The Shakespearian film cycle continues to revolve. “The Merry Wives of Windsor” is the latest of the plays to be chosen for filming—by a German company. Merle Oberon has signed a contract to appear in one picture for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It will be “The Flame Within,” written and directed by Edmund Goulding, and starring Ann Hardfng and Franchot Tone.
