HONOUR FOR CHILD

Shirley Temple’s Prize A special statuette award was given Shirley Temple, Fox Film baby star, at the annual awards banquet of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the greatest 1934 contribution to pictures. The award came as a surprise, and followed distribution of the golden statuettes voted by the Academy members to leading artists, producers, directors and writers. Irvin S. Cobb, famous humorist, who served as toast-master, following the announcement, which was greeted by an ovation, said: “When Santa Claus brought you down creation’s chimney he brought the loveliest Christmas present that was ever given to the world. ’ ’ When the youngster was called to the speakers’ table to get her statuette Shirley threw her arms about Cobb’s neck and kissed him. The famous author-humorist was visibly affected. The only other times in the history of the Academy that special awards have been voted was to Charles Chaplin for versatility in “City Lights,’’ Warner Brothers for pioneering sound with “The Jazz Singer,’’ and Walt Disney for the creation of “Mickey Mouse.”
