HARRIERS

HASTINGS CLUB NOTES Wright Heads Cup Field MIDDLE MEN IN FORM

(Bv

“Fence.’’)

Last Saturday a good field of 20 lined up for the first harriers’ race to be held in Hastings this season. The event was the first race of the Angus Cup series, the trophy being awarded to the competitor who gains the most points in the sealed handicap events throughout the season. The race was controlled by Mr. Henderson, and from the start the usual fast pace was set by Wright with Anderson close at his heels. Down Southland road they kept together and it was not until the orchard in Tollemache road was entered that Wright whs able to draw away. From here he was never threatened and finished easily, winning by about 200 yards. His time was fair, although not as good as last year, but this is probably accounted for by the fact that another more important race was in view on the King’s Birthday. G. Ready showed further improvement by displacing Anderson for second place, and before long ho will he disputing first place with Wright. Hunt was off colour on the day, but nevertheless ran strongly. G. Spurdie is slowly working into form and his run was a good one. For a new runner, N. Marshall ran an excellent race. To finish in sixth place in an open club race is ho mean feat and shows he has more than average ability. He is a real find, and before the season ends should go yet better. G. Warden and L. Spurdie performed creditably. They had a great tussle up the straight, the former just getting home first. Warden is also having his first year across country and he will develop into a useful man. Cooper and Snadden. also having their first race, ran well and the experience is bound to be beneficial. Of the remainder, bee, Poppelwell and Coles were disappointing. Training is wanted here, The club, was pleased to have a visit
