WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT MANGAORAPA A very good attendance of members and visitors were present at the monthly meeting of the Mangaorapa, Women’s Institute, which was held in the school. The afternoon was mainly taken up with business discussions. A first aid outfit was on view, and this is to be left at Mrs Redward’s home, where it will be available whenever it is needed. A competition, “something new from something old,” which had to be a child’s garment, resulted in a beautiful collection of clothing being sent to the Children’s Home. This was very kindly judged by Mrs O’Eielly and Mrs Schaffer, while the winner was Mrs M. Davidson, with Mrs Hope second. Another competition was run by Mrs Pearson and won by Mrs Stoddart. A play evening is being held in Mr Hope’s woolshed on September 15 at 8 p.m., to which members of any neighbouring institutes are invited. Community singing was indulged in, and the singing of the closing ode brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. OHURAKURA-TE POHUE GROUP The August meeting of the Ohura-kura-Te Pohtie Women’s Institute was held on Friday afternoon, the president presiding over a smaller attendance than usual, although this was somewhat augmented by five visitors. The meeting opened with the Institute song and a little business was attended to, after which some helpful and useful suggestions for improving the institute were given. These suggestions constituted the roll-call. The home competition, paper flowers, brought forth a wonderful response The daily decked table looked truly beautiful, making judging of the wipning exhibit a very difficult task. Two first prizes were awarded, Miss Julian, a bowl of golden-rod, lillies, roses, gladiolas, Canterbury bells and delphiniums, and Mrs Hankin, a bowl of red and yellow roses being the winners. Mrs Adsett secured second prize with a crotcheted basket of crepe paper Hied with konini and roses. Mrs Hughes was awarded third prize with a bowl of poppies and oats. A guessing competition, contents of a bag, was won by Mrs Dampney and Mrs Hughes (tie), Mrs Mcßobbie being third. An enjoyable and most interesting talk on gardening was given by Mr Glass, who also demonstrated papercutting for decorations. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded him. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Johnstone, Ziegler, Ruddenclau, Dampney and Miss Julian. A most enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
