N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENING EVENTS. RECORD IN 440 HURDLES. Christchurch, Dec. 9. The New Zealand amateur athletic championships was opened at Lancaster Park this afternoon in glorious weather. The track was fast. Provincial teams were up to full strength except for the defection of Williams, the young Auckland sprinter. One record was broken during the day F. R. Ramson (Wellington) lowered the existing record of 58 seconds for the quarter-miie hurdles by 1 1-5 seconds. The form shown in all the events was good. At prosent the points for the championship shield are: Wellington 20, Canteroury 5, Auckland 4, Otago 4, WangauuiTaranaki 2. A moderate easterly wind blew in the faces of the competitors in the sprint events. Results of championships ■ — 100 Yards.—First heat: M. Leadbetter (Canterbury) I, A. J. Elliott (Auckland) 2, J. A. Murphy (Canter bury) 3. Won by two yards. Time, 10 l-ssecs. Newton (WanganuiTaranaki) and Fleming (Wellington; also ran. Second neat: C. Jenkins (Wellington) 1, S. A. Black (Wanga-nui-Taranaki) 2, A- B. Clarke (Canterbury) 3- Won by three yards. Time, 10 l-osecs. Morgan (Utago) also ran. The final will bo decided to-morrow.
120 Yards Hurdles.—First heat: J. W. Shirley (Auckland) 1, C, L. Tapley (Otago) 2. Won by a yard. Ramson, the Wellington hope, fell at the third hurdle. Second heat: R W. Lander (Wellington) 1, H. D. Mor ga n (Otago) 2, G Broad (WanganuiTaranaki) 3. Won easily by five yards. Time, 16secs. Final to-mor-row. „
220 Yards.—First heat: C. Jenkins (Wellington) 1, A. J. Elliott (Audi land) 2, A- B. Clark (Canterbury) 3. Won by a yard and a half. Time, 23secs. Second heat: M. Leadbetter (Canterbury) 1, J. T. Fleming (Wellington) 2, J. L. McLoy (Auckland) 3, Leadbetter won by two yards Time, 23secs. Final to-morrow. 440 Yards Hurdles—F. R. Ransom (Wellington) 1, F- Nesdalo (Auck land) 2, H. D. Morgan (Otago) 3. Ramson took the lead early from N'esdaie and Lander, but half way round Landei retired. Nesdaie awl Ramson were together 20 .yards in front of Morgan and Broad. Ramson won in the record time of 56 4-ssecs. Throwing the Discus.—P. Munro (Wellington), 12Sft, sjin., 1; L. Hunt (Wanganui-Taranaki), L2sit. lOin., 2; E. G- Sutherland (Wellington), 114 ft., 3. McHolm (Canterbury) Harvey (Wellington) and Lang (Wan-ganui-Taranaki) also competed. Three Miles Walk.-W. Lankey (Wellington) 1, R. H Cabot (Otago) 2, J. A. Wilson (Otago) 3. Lankey led all the wav and won by nearly half a lap. Time, 22min. 58seco McKenzie (Canterbury), Wills (Wan-ganui-Taranaki) and Delury (Canterbury) also started. Throwing the Hammer.—W. McHolm (Canterbury,) 138 ft. 2in., 1; J. G. Lerkie (Otago), 138 ft. 2in-> ; ; W. Harvey (Wellington), 137 ft. 9iin-, 3. Hunt (Wanganui-Taranaki) also competed Broad Jump.—E. G.
